I remember reading John Dos Passos’ USA years ago, when he talked about whiteness and how it worked to unite immigrants who had been discriminated against — under the “white” banner. Reading Jill Lepore’s These Truths you can see it was foundational. I wrote about this in How We Became White — and we all need to look at our history in this light. Trump is the worst thing to happen in my lifetime but he has done us the favour of making this all pretty clear.
